The Grosse Ile High School drama program gives students the extracurricular opportunity to participate in the performance and production of a play. With the assistance and support of the school's Thespian Troupe, two plays are produced each year: a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. Plays are produced on a rotating schedule of two comedies, a mystery, and a drama every four years, thus giving students (if they participate all four years of high school) the opportunity to be involved in the three major genres of theater. Auditions are open to the entire student body as are all technical and behind the scenes responsibilities. Past productions have included "You Can't Take It with You", "The Diary of Anne Frank", "Damn Yankees", "Once Upon A Mattress", "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "Hello, Dolly!, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Wizard of Oz", "Footloose", "The Crucible", "The Pirates of Penzance", "Murder on the Nile", and "Oklahoma!".
Grosse Ile High School's Thespian Troupe 2860 is one of thousands of troupes belonging to the International Thespian Society, an international organization created to promote theater education and reward students who actively participate in their school's drama program. Because the society is an honorary one, students must be invited to join their local troupe. As a student becomes involved in a dramatic production, he or she begins to earn points based on the particular responsibility they have undertaken and how well they have carried out those responsibilities. Currently, when a student has earned 15 points, she or he is eligible for membership and will receive an invitation to join the local troupe. Once their national dues are paid (currently $25), they become a life time member in the International Thespian Society, receive a year's subscription to Dramatics magazine, and active members are allowed to wear the troupe's honor stole at graduation.
