School reform bills in Lansing before the lame duck legislature will damage Grosse Ile schools and public education across the state
This is an urgent call to action to respond to bills in Lansing that will affect Grosse Ile Township Schools and public education in Michigan. The package of bills, designed to dismantle public education as we know it, is being pushed through the "lame duck" legislative session between now and mid-December, hastily and without adequate review. We need immediate action to prevent significant damage to public K-12 education.
Write your elected officials and spread the word!

1) Here is an excellent write-up by the Bloomfield Hills Superintendent summarizing the bills and concerns with them: http://www.bloomfield.org/news/item/index.aspx?pageaction=ViewSinglePublic&LinkID=215&ModuleID=167&NEWSPID=1. Please email or call your elected officials (contact links below), and spread the news to friends and family throughout Michigan about these bills.
2) The Tri-County Alliance for Public Education (tricountyalliance.org) provides more information on the issues, as well as easy links to take action and communicate. You can sign up for "Capwiz" at the site for alerts. The website has pre-scripted letters to send to elected officials, as well as an Action Alert to pass this message on to friends and family elsewhere in Michigan.
3) The Ile Camera recently published a letter from Dr. Greg Goyert, Grosse Ile Township School board member, on HB 5923, which may be found here: http://thenewsherald.com/articles/2012/11/29/ile_camera/localopinion/doc50aaadaf789d8369433723.txt.
Comment regarding the Oxford Foundation's attempt to dismantle and defund public K-12 education:
There is yet another opportunity to become informed and take action by responding to a plan to further defund community-based public schools, and disperse those funds to unproven education corporations. In July, the Oxford Foundation, led by attorney Richard McClelland, was chartered with developing a proposal to overhaul K-12 education funding in Michigan. The project was also intended to support Governor Snyder's vision of education being delivered "Any Time, Any Place, Any Way, Any Pace."
This memo contains the Foundation's perspective on school funding, and the scope of the project: http://oxfordfoundationmi.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/memo_to_interested_persons.pdf. Here is the report the foundation just issued, in the form of draft legislation: http://oxfordfoundationmi.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/mefp-draft-version-1.pdf. This is the link for commenting on that legislation: http://oxfordfoundationmi.com/. Please note that comments are due by Friday, December 14th.
MASB HEADLINES - This publication by the Michigan Association of School Boards explains the bills and the organization's concerns; it also reports on the positions taken by the elected State Board of Education and the State Superintendent.
Thank you for your support of Grosse Ile's students and schools!
