Student Council Commitment

 

Requirements of anyone selected to be on student council:

 

Leadership- You are expected to be a positive role model for others in the school.  This means your behavior is above reproach.  You are not the person in detention or the person teachers are complaining about who can’t be quiet in class or who is creating a

problem. You have chosen to be in a leadership position and are required to act the part. 

 

Scholarship- You are required to maintain the minimum grade point average throughout your time on council.  The minimum for an officer position is 3.0.  The minimum for a representative is 2.5.  If your cumulative grade point average drops below this, you will lose your status as an active member of council. 

 

Commitment- You will be required to be present and to participate at all major events, regardless of your position title.  You are expected to be early or on time to events and to stay as long as possible.  This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  1. June retreat meeting.
  2. Picture day/ staff luncheon events.

Homecoming Activities:

  1. Attend and help at the Volleyball game.
  2. At least 3 hours at float site per weeks during float building.
  3. Participate in at least 4 of 5 spirit week days (5 is ideal, but field trips and other things may excuse one day.)
  4. Float break down until dance set up begins or until float is apart. 
  5. Dance set up, until at least noon (usually Saturday morning).  Make hair appointments no earlier than 12:30 that day.
  6. Dance clean up, until finished (usually Sunday morning).
  7. Serve on a homecoming committee.

All year:

  1. Be at all morning meetings throughout the school year.
  2. Actively participate in one committee per month.
  3. Work class concessions.
  4. Be part of all student council events and support all classes’ events. 

Sno-Go:

  1. Participate in at least 4 of 5 spirit week days (5 is ideal, but field trips and other things may excuse one day.)
  2. Attend class basketball game.
  3. Dance set up until finished.
  4. Dance clean up until finished.

At Conferences:

  1. Be attentive and respectful to all speakers.
  2. Bring home great ideas to try.
  3. Represent Grosse Ile High School in the most respectful way possible.

 

 

 

Election Procedures

  1. Only outgoing seniors in student government shall serve on the election committee. 
  2. Outgoing seniors may not vote in the elections. 
  3. Campaign rules:
    1. You may only campaign one week before elections. 
    2. There is no expenditure limit.
    3. No professional advertising (buttons, posters, bumpers stickers, etc.) may be used for the campaign.
    4. Any posters used must be approved/initialed by the administration. 
    5. No flyer type photocopies are to be posted in the halls. 
    6. All materials put up in the halls must be taken down no later than the afternoon following the election. 
    7. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in termination of your candidacy.
  4. Candidates will be given their recommendation/resume forms prior to elections. 
  5. The following officers are to be elected:
    1. Student Council President*

*Note- Presidential candidates must have previously served on the council, been a class officer or have formal recommendations from five Grosse Ile High School teachers.  Elected presidents must attend or have previously attended summer camp through the Michigan Association of Student Councils. 

    1. Student Council Vice-President
    2. Student Council Secretary
    3. Student Council Treasurer
    4. All Class Officers

All officer candidates must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA. 

  1. If there is one person running for an office unopposed, the candidate must receive one vote over half the votes cast to be elected. 
  2. If a candidate does not receive more than one vote over half the votes cast, that position will be declared open.  The position will be filled by an interview conducted by the newly elected officers and the adviser(s). 
  3. If there is more than one person running for an office, one candidate must receive a majority or there will be a run-off between the two candidates. 
  4. Candidates for class offices will give their speeches at their respective class meetings.  Candidates for Student Council President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer will give their speeches at each class meeting or to the entire student body. 
  5. All class and student council offices must be filled one week prior to the dismissal of school. 
  6. All officers and members of the student government must attend a mandatory leadership-    training meeting before the fall they are to begin serving.  The date will be announced prior to summer vacation.

Appoint and determine duties of officers and committees

Appoint members to various committees

Prepare agendas for all meetings that you chair

Set evaluation procedures for all projects and activities
