Grading
*This is my
general grading scale, all categories can be adjusted +/- at my discretion.
I grade on Points not Letter Grades.
Writing papers
All papers and report conclusion/reflections will be in the
Collins Writing format.
Semester grades
1st semester total points from 1st & 2nd Card Marking
2nd semester 90% total points from 3rd & 4th CM 10% Final Exam
--MAJOR GRADES are 60% of Final Grade--
(Weighted 60)
MAJOR grades are based on content knowledge and scientific procedures.
20-100 pt Test (usually 50 questions)
20-100 pt MAJOR Projects
100 pt Science Fair project
20+ pt Quizzes
"prizes"
--Minor
Grades are 40% of Final Grade--
(Weighted 40)
Minor grades are based on "life skills."
All minor grades
are based on a "5 points per" system.
Homework and Daily
Assignments
(most of the minor grade)
Graded on effort, completion and fully following
directions.
Binder Checks
Random checks to make sure it is kept up to date and strictly
science.
Minor Quizzes
These 5-10+ point quizzes are given often. They are used to
complete the homework process.
Hint: If a reading has been assigned expect a short quiz.
On-line Assignments
At least 5 pts per assignment graded on accuracy and completion
In class Activities
This consists of all activities we do in class. They will earn
5 pts per day worked on. The write ups for some activities may be a
separate MAJOR grade depending on the size of the activity or write up.
Notes
Students MUST take and maintain a dediecated 3
subject notebook for their CONCEPT MAPS, NOTES and BELLRINGERS. This
notebook will be checked on a regular basis to make sure it is being kept
up. 5 points per check will be given. A continuous single
dedicated science notebook will earn EXTRA CREDIT!!
--Extra Credit--
Under no circumstances
will I give extra credit at the end of a card marking to "save your grade."
I give ample opportunity throughout each semester and on all MAJOR grades to
"save your grade" with extra credit and free points.
Supplies can be donated for extra credit
Class
supplies. I also
assign a Binder that
can be chosen to do for up to 2%
increase in your final card marking grade. For more
information on the binder click
here. You
can also maintain a single notebook to earn ex cr.
I will either give extra credit questions or free points on all
quizzes/tests. I give Free points for following directions.
Some of the details I give free points for are putting your name, hour, date
on the paper, starting on a certain number, not talking during the exam
etc... I will also put the answers to questions
IN the directions and remind the
students to read the directions multiple times. If they do not answer
these free point questions or put their name, hour, date etc... they are
marked wrong. I do this because following directions is an important
part of science, school and life.
I give the opportunity for approximately 2%
(+/-.5) increase in final
grade with extra credit.
Not including MAJOR grade extra credit. These are on a per grade
or "prize" basis.
The "prize" is given as a reward for
class challenges or additional work. I feel rewarding the grade is more important for
school success than giving candy, toys etc... as "prizes." These
prizes are "Major Point" cards that can be added to past or future MAJOR
grades or "Homework Passes" that can be traded for a homework assignment, a
missed assignment or simply as 5 extra credit points (the same value as a
daily homework assignment) .

Homework
Homework is Graded on EFFORT, COMPLETION
and FULLY FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS. This means if there was an obvious lack
of effort credit will not be given. If it is not complete, credit
will not be given. I will assign homework with specific directions to
follow. If these directions are not followed credit will not be given. If all three of these factors are followed 5 points will be
earned. Homework is an all or nothing grade.
I do not correct most homework assignments we check them together so it MUST
be completed WHEN I CHECK IT at the beginning of the hour or it is "not
turned in."

Resubmit Folder
Most MAJOR GRADE assignments with a 69% or
less grade (not including
test/quizzes) can be resubmitted for another chance. The final grade will be the new points added to the
old points divided by two. In order to resubmit the student must...
...return the assignment in the resubmit folder with
all needed info (posted on the
folder).
...turn in the old assignment with the new one.
...resubmitted the day after it is returned to them.
Late work
Late homework will not be accepted without
a filled out "late work excuse sheet" from parents. ONLY one
assignment per day per sheet will be accepted. NO late work is
accepted the last two weeks of a card marking.
All absent work is given 1 extra day per missed day to turn in.
IF a "comment" of incomplete was given the assignment can be
resubmitted for 75% credit.
No Name Papers
All assignments MUST be turned in with the
students name AND hour. If it is turned in without this information
the "No name" papers go into the "No Name" folder. Minor grade papers
with no name will not receive credit. MAJOR GRADE assignments will count as
a ZERO until the "owner" is found. If there is no name on a "scantron"
you will be given an new test to take. This is done because there is
NO way to prove ownership of a scantron. So PLEASE make sure your name
is on the test!!!

Discipline
The 4 C's
Caution, Call, Conference, Consequences
First, the student will be cautioned (warned)
about their behavior. Blue Slip
Second, parents will receive a phone call
from the student and/or myself during class.
If the issues continue a conference with the
parents will be requested.
If this does not stop the issue, administration will be notified for
consequences.
