Dear Grosse Ile Families,

It has certainly been a true Michigan winter on the Island;  extremely cold temperatures, snowy conditions, and a few days where the weather has forced us to pause our usual routines. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and support as we work through these moments together.

When it comes to weather-related closures, the decision is not taken lightly. As Superintendent, I rely on input from the Grosse Ile Police Department and township municipality, district administration, the GITS maintenance department, the National Weather Service, and neighboring districts.  In addition, before every incoming weather day, I also participate in a Zoom call with a local meteorologist to review the most up-to-date forecasts and timing. I will admit, it has been fun to meet some of the television weather personalities along the way!

Decisions about weather-related closures take into account the safety of our students while watching wind, ice, visibility, and snow accumulation.  You may not be aware, but our safe transportation of students goes beyond getting students to and from our three buildings here on GI; we also coordinate with other districts for consortium programs such as DCTC and special education, which adds another layer of complexity. I will do my best to make closure decisions as quickly as possible so families can plan accordingly, and while no plan can account for every variable, please know that student safety remains the GITS guiding principle. Please have patience and know that I am committed to making the very best decision with the information I have.

While remote learning has emerged as a tool in recent years, switching to virtual instruction on short notice is challenging. For now, snow days will remain the classic “no school” days we all remember.  Let’s enjoy pajamas, hot cocoa, and maybe even building a snowman!

Even in the heart of winter, one thing remains constant: the strength of GITS!  As we move through February, I want to highlight a few exciting events that showcase what our schools are all about.

Global Day of Play

In February, our elementary students will participate in Global Day of Play, a special day dedicated to the power of play in learning. This is a worldwide celebration that encourages children to step away from screens and structured routines and engage in creative, hands-on, imaginative play with one another.  Play is more than fun; it strengthens problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and social-emotional learning. We are excited to give our youngest learners a day that supports healthy development while building connection and joy in school.

Opportunity Night

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Opportunity Night at GIHS on February 4! It was a wonderful evening connecting with current 8th-grade families and high school families while showcasing the many opportunities available to our students.

GIHS offers so much to be proud of, including:

  • A wide variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses

  • Dual Enrollment with local colleges

  • Direct College with the University of Michigan–Dearborn, allowing students to earn college credit right at GIHS

  • DCTC pathways such as Health Careers, Dental Occupations, Culinary Arts, and more

  • Outstanding clubs, athletics, and extracurriculars that build connection, leadership, and school spirit

We loved sharing what makes Grosse Ile High School such a strong place to learn and grow. Thank you again for being part of a great night!

Thank you for being part of our school community. Stay warm, stay safe, and we look forward to seeing you throughout February.
