Environmental Science students at Grosse Ile High School have experienced an incredible stretch of hands-on, real-world learning opportunities this spring.
Students explored ecosystems firsthand during a field experience at Belle Isle, where they visited the aquarium and botanical gardens to study plant and aquatic environments. They also attended the Detroit River Career Expo, connecting classroom learning to future career pathways in environmental science and related fields.
Throughout the semester, students worked with Dr. Paul Gloor of the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy (GINLC) to develop presentations for the upcoming Earth Day event. They also continued caring for the school’s rain garden, reinforcing the importance of local stewardship and environmental responsibility.
One of the highlights of the semester was participation in the River Notes program, where students built a deeper connection to water through science, art, and reflection alongside artist Stephanie Prechter and Navy SEAL PJ Ramsey. Students also welcomed University of Michigan PhD student David Williams, who brought environmental science concepts to life through interactive theater.
These meaningful experiences showcase the curiosity, creativity, and commitment of GIHS students as they explore real-world solutions and deepen their understanding of the environment.
