Day 4 Recap – GIMS 8th Grade DC Trip Another fantastic day in Washington, D.C. for our GIMS 8th graders! We started the morning at the National Museum of the U.S. Army,, where we explored the history and impact of American soldiers. From there, we had a museum-filled afternoon, visiting the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the Museum of American History, and the National Portrait Gallery, where students discovered fascinating exhibits on everything from iconic artifacts to famous historical figures. After an exciting day of learning, we enjoyed some shopping and dinner at Pentagon City Mall, giving students a chance to relax and pick up some souvenirs. The evening wrapped up with a memorable night tour of D.C.'s landmarks, including the 9/11 Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial—a breathtaking way to reflect on history under the glow of the city lights. With an early night in, everyone had time to pack up and rest for the long journey home on Friday. It's hard to believe the trip is almost over, but what an unforgettable experience it has been so far!

Day 3 of the 8th Grade Trip – A Success! We couldn’t have asked for better weather—sunny and 65 degrees! The day began with a visit to the zoo, where we saw an incredible variety of animals, including the much-anticipated Panda exhibit. Next, we toured the stunning National Cathedral, exploring its beautiful architecture and scenic grounds. We also visited the Holocaust Museum, a moving experience for our students. We then made a fun stop at the White House for a quick photo op before heading off to an afternoon of monument and memorial tours, including the Washington Monument, World War I, and World War II memorials. The evening wrapped up at Smokey Glen Farm, where we enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner, music from a DJ, and plenty of outdoor activities. A fantastic day from start to finish!

Our eighth graders had an amazing second day in Washington, D.C. We started the morning at the Spy Museum, followed by a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. There, we had the privilege of witnessing the beautiful Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was a true honor to have our four GIMS students place a wreath at the tomb. Next, we took a walking tour of the Capitol Building and spent the afternoon sightseeing at various memorials. Our students placed beautiful artifacts at the Vietnam Wall Memorial to honor those who have served. We also visited the Korean War Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. The evening ended with a ghost tour in Alexandria, followed by an ice cream sundae bar back at the hotel! It was a fun-packed Day 2 for GIMS.

Thank you to all the students who submitted essays honoring the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Your thoughtful reflections and dedication to honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice are truly commendable. Your words help keep their legacy alive and remind us of the importance of service, sacrifice, and remembrance. Congratulations to Ruby Wharton, Jacob Bouwman, Nathan Howes, and Drew Lakatosh! They will represent Grosse Ile Middle School by laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This is a tremendous honor and a meaningful way to pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed for our country.
